Course Introduction: As our country struggles through healthcare reform it is becoming clear that the indulgent American lifestyle is causing high rates of chronic disease and the escalating cost that goes with it. This 4-part Lifestyle-change Course, The Holistic Lifestyle: Contemporary Science Discovers Ancient Wisdom, was originally created for the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at the University of Connecticut where it was described as "Life-changing and Inspiring!" It was designed to motivate individuals toward a healthful lifestyle reducing the need for expensive, high-tech medical intervention. Although most participants take the entire course some choose individual classes. The course is presented by Holistic Lifestyles, LLC and Dr. Jim Prado who draws on contemporary research supporting a low-tech, natural approach to lifestyle modification as a means of reducing the burden of chronic disease. Our ancestors and their lifestyle have evolved over millions of years. Unfortunately, as civilization has journeyed through the industrial age and beyond, much of the accumulated wisdom responsible for health and survival has either been lost or pushed aside. Our contemporary culture has chosen to exchange a natural truth, long treasured by our ancestors, for the promises of science and technology. Paradoxically it is contemporary science that has begun to bring us back to the wisdom of our ancestors. This “inspiring and life-changing” course is the perfect mix of science and spirit—the science that supports a more natural and holistic lifestyle and spirit that motivates us to live in balance with nature.
